Heidi is a 1937 American family film directed by Allan Dwan. Child star Shirley Temple plays Heidi. The film is loosely based on the novel of the same name by Johanna Spyri. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heidi_(1937) Plot: Heidi is brought by her aunt Dete to her grandfather Adolph Kramer. Kramer lives on a mountain pasture above a village in the Eastern Swiss Alps near Maienfeld. The villagers are not happy that Dete wants to leave the child with "Alp-Oehi" because they know how quick-tempered he can be and that he avoids the community in the village. Dete is not interested in this any further; her job in Frankfurt is more important to her, so she wants to get rid of Heidi as quickly as possible. Alp-Oehi is initially not at all enthusiastic about having to look after Heidi, but quickly succumbs to her lovable nature. After a few weeks he can no longer imagine life without his little granddaughter. He shows her how to make cheese and milk goats, he collects wood with her for the winter and even goes sleighing with her. He also reads bedtime stories to the little girl. One story is about a poor Dutch girl who wins the heart of a prince by dancing in her wooden shoes. This fairy tale is presented in a vivid way, as if Heidi and her grandfather were watching a film and the little girl in the film looks like Heidi. Pastor Schultz tries to persuade Adolph Kramer to reconcile with the villagers and send Heidi to school in the village. Heidi's grandfather initially wants nothing to do with this. But Heidi convinces him to go to mass with her in the village and at the end of the service everyone sings together. It is Heidi's birthday and her grandfather has carved her a pair of beautiful wooden shoes. He has also promised her that there will be a celebration. He wants to run errands with her in the village as soon as he gets back from chopping wood. While Heidi is waiting longingly for her grandfather, her aunt Dete suddenly appears and tells the child that she should come along for a moment, as she has a surprise for her and that Heidi will soon be back with her grandfather. When the grandfather returns from chopping wood, Heidi has disappeared and all his calling and searching is of no use. As he runs down to the village, he just sees the sleigh with Heidi driving away. Pastor Schultz tells Adolph Kramer that Dete has taken the child to Frankfurt. The grandfather then sets off on foot to Frankfurt to look for Heidi and bring her back. In Frankfurt, Dete takes Heidi to the distinguished Sesemann family, where the girl is to become a playmate for their disabled daughter Klara. Dete receives a fee for this. Miss Rottenmeier, the housekeeper, is not impressed by the mountain child's untamed nature and would like to get rid of Heidi as soon as possible, but has to bow to the wishes of the master of the house, who wants Heidi's company for his daughter. However, she sees her wish to make herself indispensable to Klara and thus also to Mr. Sesemann, and perhaps even to marry him, threatened.
