Arthur Conan Doyle was a British writer and doctor who raised the detective novels that began with Edgar Allan Poe to a position beloved by the public. While attending Edinburgh Medical School, Conan Doyle worked as a doctor on a whaling ship for several months to earn a living when his father was hospitalized for alcoholism. After graduating from medical school, he also worked as a doctor on a cargo ship. After that, he opened an ophthalmology hospital and began writing along with treating patients. The first work featuring Sherlock Holmes, A Study in Scarlet, was published in 1887 and did not receive good results, but the second work, The Signature of Four, was published in 1890 and was successful. Arthur Conan Doyle completed the Sherlock Holmes series with four full-length novels, including [The Hound of the Buskervilles] and [The Valley of Fear], and 56 short stories, including [The Identity of the Groom] which we will introduce today. In Arthur Conan Doyle's works, the genius detective Sherlock Holmes solves numerous cases with the doctor Watson, and the relationship between Dr. Watson and Holmes begins when Dr. Watson decides to share a boarding house after returning home from a battle where he was enlisted as a military doctor. After that, Watson becomes Holmes' friend and helper, and the narrator records Holmes' activities as he solves cases, adding a vivid sense of presence.
