Paula Josette met a young man online. They both messaged each other through social media. She wrote to him from her home; he from a prison, located in Hermosillo, Sonora. After a little over a month of maintaining a long-distance relationship, the young woman, 23 years old, confessed to her mother that the man she was talking to was an inmate and that she planned to go meet him. Even with her mother's disapproval, Paula decided to go to CERESO 2 and meet for the first time the man she claimed to love, so on the afternoon of January 14, 2024, in the company of one of her friends, they entered the prison for a supposed conjugal visit without carrying any of the requirements requested by regulation. According to statements from the CERESO authorities, approximately two hours after her friends entered, Paula began to feel ill. First aid was given to her without medical personnel, and two hours later, she was transferred in an unofficial van to a hospital in Hermosillo. According to the authorities' version, Paula died of a sudden heart attack inside the clinic, but her family rejects that version, as they claim that Josette died inside the prison due to induced asphyxiation. 8 months have passed since the events and until now Paula's case has more questions than answers, since until now there is no progress in the investigation that can prove what happened.
