Viktor Ullmann suffered all the adversities of the first half of the 20th century. Branded as a "full Jew," he met a violent death in the gas chambers of Auschwitz 80 years ago. At the same time, he recognized the opportunities to seize important impulses for shaping his biography. Through study, research and encounters with people, including Albert Steffen, he intensively engaged with anthroposophy, especially with Rudolf Steiner's statements on music. With his compositions he was able to create decisive, formative influences for the world and for humanity. Today, as was the case during his lifetime, he is seen as one of the key composer personalities in the music world. MARCUS GERHARDTS, born in 1956, is a musician and cellist who teaches, gives concerts and conducts research. He has worked for the AGiD's Stuttgart work center for twelve years and has been its AZ representative for six years. 35 years ago he began working in the Ullmann Archive at the Goetheanum; as part of this he supervised and traveled to performances of Viktor Ullmann's operas, among others.
