NR-22 was published by ordinance 3,214 in 1978 under the title “Underground work”. Since then, it has undergone eleven updates, the last of which was in 2019. However, before that, in 1999, by ordinance 2,037, its title was changed to what we have today: occupational health and safety in mining. In 2018, it was classified by ordinance 787 as a sectoral standard, since it regulates the execution of work in a specific sector, in this case, the mining sector. The standard is composed of several chapters, distributed in topics related to the various mining activities, covering not only open-pit and underground mines, but also gold mines (which are extremely deficient in occupational health and safety measures). A personal curiosity is in order here. In 2015, I had the opportunity to work in a large salt factory of a well-known brand in Brazil. Some of the salt used in the production process comes from Chile and the Northeast region of the country, while the other part is extracted in the region itself, which classifies the company as a mining company.
