Seu Jorge is one of the most talented artists of his generation — he sings, plays, composes, acts, produces and even knits, as we’ve seen on his Instagram. Jokes aside, the artist in our “Portrait” of the week needs no introduction, since his resume is as extensive as it is extensive: City of God, Casa de Areia, Tropa de Elite 2, Pelé, Paraíso Perdido, Os Normais, Irmandade, Abe (Netflix) and, now, Seu Jorge is the star of Marighella, directed by Wagner Moura. In addition to his brilliant career on the big screen (and small screen), Seu Jorge is also one of our greatest performers, winner of the Latin Grammy, MTV Video Music Brazil, Prêmio Multishow, Troféu Imprensa and many others. But it wasn’t always like this. Seu Jorge literally had to turn things around to get to where he is now. And there were many battles to be fought for, the until-then homeless man, to achieve all the success he deserved. Hosted by Alê Garcia, our Omelete Portrait today is by him, Seu Jorge. All boys, living with their parents “in one room”, as Seu Jorge once described it. His childhood in Gogó da Ema, in Belford Roxo, Rio de Janeiro, was no joke. As a teenager, he attended samba circles, funk dances and dances in the outskirts of Rio, accompanied by his father and brothers. Seu Jorge got a few invitations here and there to sing in Rio's nightlife and impressed everyone with his talent (even today, right?). After his brother's death and his house was invaded, Seu Jorge had no money for rent and ended up living on the streets. He went hungry and was alone for a long time — him and his guitar. Between odd jobs, singing here and there, and a lot of fighting, Seu Jorge released the album Samba Esporte Fino in 2001, with the hit Carolina. In 2002, he made his film debut in a film that would become a national brand: he played Mané Galinha in Cidade de Deus, by Fernando Meirelles and Katia Lund. Since then, in addition to his enviable resume, Seu Jorge has known how to make good lemonade out of lemons and even sang at the wedding of our next Catwoman (DC Comics), Zoe Kravitz. Now, he is the protagonist of Wagner Moura's film, Marighella, and is once again being applauded by the audience. In Marighella (2021), Seu Jorge plays Carlos Marighella, the politician, writer, and Brazilian who marked the organization of the armed struggle against the Brazilian military dictatorship in the 1960s.
