Today we are discussing Seneca and the two literary genres he addressed: tragedies and philosophical texts. Seneca is a diverse author with enormous influence in Antiquity. Seneca's tragedies are considered the darkest in ancient literature and focus on the unleashing of passions and their catastrophic results. They exemplify the Stoic idea that passions must be completely eliminated. On the other hand, Seneca is also described as a reasonable Stoic, who aims to enter into dialogue with other philosophical schools and guide readers on the path of Stoic philosophy. If Epictetus were a ristretto espresso, Seneca would be a frothy cappuccino: the amount of caffeine is the same, but the form is different. In his philosophical writings, Seneca addresses his texts mainly to the Roman nobility, being himself one of the most important figures in the Empire. He uses rhetorical strategies to convince readers to adopt the Stoic path. Also, in "On Clemency", Seneca creates a political manual for Nero, suggesting the importance of being reasonable and merciful, without falling into the inability to make decisions. Since we have decided to live forever, we decided that we will have enough time to tell about the intellectual history of humanity in a series of podcasts starting with antiquity and reaching the present day. Since we know, however, the right measure, we do not intend to talk about everything, but only about the Western space, starting from the ancient Greeks. Our plan is that, every week, we will have a discussion about an essential theme in the humanities. We will therefore talk about literature, history, religion and, of course, philosophy. Everything in chronological order. We hope you will accompany us on this journey in which we want to do small exercises in conceptual geology to answer the question: What world do we live in? Casa Paleologu is a place of discussions and intellectual friendships, where the courses are familiar, accessible and are intended to enrich personalities. ------------------- Casa Paleologu Website: https://paleologu.com/ro Facebook: / casapaleologu Instagram: / casa.paleol. .
