Caecilians, also known as blind snakes or minhocuçus, are amphibians, like frogs. But they look a lot like snakes - they have a serpentine body, without limbs. They live hidden underground, so it is difficult to find and study them. At the Structural Biology Laboratory of the Butantan Institute, researchers discovered something unusual about them: unlike all other amphibians, they have venom that can be injected into their prey during a bite. Carlos Jared and Pedro Mailho Fontana talk about these specialized venom glands that they found along the teeth of caecilians. The article was published on July 3, in the journal iScience.
