Stéphane Bern recounts the tragic fate of Emperor Maximilian and his wife, Charlotte of Belgium, two sovereigns from the great noble families of Europe who were designated to occupy the throne of Mexico. They find themselves, in spite of themselves, actors in a drama that is beyond their control, caught between the ambitions of France, led by Napoleon III, the inflexible attitude of the Emperor of Austria Francis Joseph and the expansionist aims of the United States.
