Join us as we explore these traditions with the Vinter family, guardians of these recipes for generations. The Culinary Heritage of German Settlers German settlers arrived in Petrópolis with a rich culinary background. Among the recipes they brought were apple cuca and German bread. Over time, they adapted to Brazilian ingredients such as banana and coconut, creating new versions of these delicacies. We spoke with Renato Vinter, whose family keeps this tradition alive, passing the recipes down from generation to generation. The Secret of the Recipe: Dona Marlene in Action Dona Marlene, married to a German descendant, is responsible for perpetuating the traditional recipe for cuca and German bread in the Vinter family. She reveals to us the secrets she learned by observing her mother-in-law and sisters-in-law, such as the use of lard to give the bread an authentic flavor and the importance of kneading the cuca dough by hand. The Uniqueness of German Cuca German cuca is distinguished from a conventional cake by its lower sugar content and unique texture. Dona Marlene explains to us the subtleties that make this delicacy something special. During preparation, we watch the dough rise and receive the traditional fillings, before being baked. The artisanal process is a true art passed down from mother to daughter. Traditional Delights: Tasting and Curiosities In addition to cuca and bread, we explore another delight: a dumpling similar to a sonhos, made with German bread dough. Filled with cream or jelly, it leads us to question the influences between culinary cultures. We took the opportunity to taste these delicacies and understand why these dishes are so loved by residents and visitors of Petrópolis.
