As thanks to Charles IV. founded university, Bohemia becomes an important intellectual center, so Prague becomes the largest spiritual center north of the Alps - a religious competitor of Rome. Thanks to the largest and rarest collection of relics, Prague is turning into an important place of pilgrimage. His father, Jan Luxemburgský, even tried to restore the Knighthood of the Round Table in Prague. His son Karel builds Karlštejn as a grail castle. Karlštejn does not have a military mission, but serves as a mystical ark - a repository of Czech treasure and crown jewels, the mystical focus of the Czech kingdom. Karel also founds Prague's New Town, which is supposed to represent the new, heavenly Jerusalem. And indeed, its layout – the ground plan, the lengths of the streets, the size of the temple precinct, the position of the shrines – is a faithful image of the city of Jerusalem. He fills temples and churches, laid out and built according to alchemical astrological and hermetic symbolism, with holy relics that he personally obtains, often by indiscriminate means, from all over the then known world. The symbolism of the heavenly Jerusalem is also embodied in the decoration of the most sacred insignia of the Czech kings - the crown of St. Wenceslas. The shape and choice of set stones are intended to remind the description of the holy city from the apocalyptic text.
