After the murder of a woman in central Hesse, the Austrian Jack Unterweger is sent to prison. There he becomes a model prisoner, writes poems and becomes a star of the Viennese literary scene. After his early release, he enjoys the dazzling literary life, but murders of women soon begin again in Unterweger's vicinity. But should a poet as celebrated as him relapse and continue to murder? Jack? "Our" Jack? Nobody believes he is capable of that. And so he not only writes poems and novels, but also works as a journalist in the red-light district.
