National parks and nature parks are protected areas specific and unique in nature, plants and animals that exist there, but also in people whose roots are deeply connected to the space, culture and traditions of the region. The departure of people from Stara Planina has been going on for decades. Today these villages are deserted and nature is left to flourish, grow and suffocate itself. The high mountain pastures abandoned by people and their livestock have grown into bushes, and the bachia is becoming less and less. Today there are several villages in the Stara planina nature park. There are few people and less and less livestock, which used to be exclusively autochthonous breeds such as the Karacačan sheep, pramenka, bush, donkeys and mountain horses. The pastures are overgrown, and instead of the rare plants that were the trademark of Stara planina, there are more and more junipers and bushes. Is there any hope for the return of people to these villages? Sergej Ivanov is a veterinarian by profession. After his studies, he returned to Dimitrovgrad and on his farm at the foot of Stara Planina, besides donkeys, he raises about 200 sheep and goats. On his farm Ravna Šuma, Aleksandar Vasov keeps autochthonous breeds of Karacačan sheep, Balkan goats and Karacačan shepherd dogs. They are the hope of Stara Planina.
