The Swiss Army’s disaster relief standby battalion can be deployed in natural disasters at home and abroad. In order to be ready for action, the recruits must practice rescuing people from rubble. Also taking part in one such exercise for once was presenter Kathrin Hönegger. She is rescued from the depths by the young conscripts. Mudslide in Schwanden On August 29, 2023, a mudslide went down in Schwanden in the canton of Glarus and buried parts of the village. And shortly before Christmas 2023, another landslide came down the slope. In order to be able to stabilize the landslide, the experts on site need to know where the water is accumulating underground. This is because it presses on the earth's mass and there is a risk of further landslides. One of the first on site in August 2023 was Ruedi Stüssi. How can bridges and roads be protected from floods of the century? At ETH Zurich, environmental engineer Barbara Stocker and her colleague are using a model to test whether a bridge in Andermatt in the canton of Uri can withstand future floods. Protection against hail Hail causes major damage, particularly to buildings. In Oberkirch, Martin Jordi is testing whether photovoltaic systems can withstand heavy hailstorms, and in Bern, in the Mobiliar Lab, climatologist Olivia Romppainen is looking for ways to improve the hail warning system in Switzerland.
