In this last video of the summer of 2024, I tell about the military history of Infantry Regiment 30, founded in Savo. At the beginning of the war, lieutenant colonel Erkki Ruotsalo was the commander of the regiment. After the winter war, he served as the head of the Northern Savo protectorate district. At the beginning of the Continuation War, the soldiers of the regiment came to the Ruotsalo regiment mainly from Savoia keepers, but during the war many men from North Karelia and also dozens of men from my hometown Ilomantsi were recruited. The Savolai regiment belonged to Colonel Antero Svensson's 7th Division and its soldiers were assigned to Tohmajärvi in June 1941 and from there they advanced to Pälkjärvi on July 10 and further to Pirttipohja, Kirkkolahti and Sortavala. In the first autumn of the war, the division advanced behind Syväri to the area of Osta, Gora and Kimjärvi. The division was at the forefront there until the summer of 1944. The Red Army's major offensive began on the 9th–10th. June 1944, and against the rapidly advancing Red Army, men from almost all front blocks were gathered to Ihantala and Vuosalmi. The 30th Infantry Regiment was also transferred to Ihantala on June 24. I have processed the black-and-white photos of the National Museum Agency and the military archive in the video with image processing programs.
