Considered the starting point of modern space exploration, the launch of Sputnik-1 by the Soviet Union in 1957 had a lasting impact on technology and international relations. The first artificial satellite to orbit the Earth represented a victory — albeit a short-lived one — for the now-defunct communist federation in the Cold War against the United States and allowed the collection of valuable scientific data for future space missions. A year later, the then-nascent American space agency, NASA, responded in kind and launched Vanguard 1, developed with the aim of testing launch technologies and collecting data on the atmosphere, in addition to contributing to the country's vigorous space research.
