How do you imagine yourself at 60: dependent or functional? In this Wednesday's edition of the Active Aging Group of Santa Casa de Maceió, geriatrician Marcus Vinícius talks about sarcopenia, which is the decrease in muscle mass, is part of the aging process and is partly responsible for the loss of quality of life in old age. In healthy people, the decrease in lean mass usually begins after the age of 30, with losses of around 1% to 2% per year. Without preventive measures, 80-year-olds may have only 50% of the muscle mass they had when they were young. "It is important to emphasize that practicing well-supervised physical exercise is essential to strengthen muscles. Sarcopenia with loss of strength and muscle mass leads to greater vulnerability to diseases, increases the risk of falls, memory loss, hospitalization and death. There is no medication that can combat sarcopenia, but changing habits, along with the monitoring of specialists, such as geriatricians and nutritionists, is very important”, said geriatrician Marcos Vinícius. Some diseases, such as cancer, serious infectious or inflammatory processes, and serious trauma, also lead to accelerated loss of muscle mass, much more serious than that which occurs with aging. With the support of the Teaching and Research Division, doctors from various specialties, as well as pharmacists, psychologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nutritionists and social workers, take turns giving informative classes that cover guidance on health and nutrition, sexuality, technology, social rights, among others. PAUSE – The Active Aging Group project is free and aimed at men and women over 60 years of age. In 2020, the in-person course would be held for 240 students enrolled in classes divided into Mondays and Thursdays, at the Santa Casa de Maceió Study Center. Now, once a week, classes will be available on online platforms.
