Opera and ballet gave Berlin's public life a festive character of their own. Frederick hired the most excellent male and female singers and dancers to decorate his stage. A particularly dazzling personality was the dancer Signora Barberina (Barbara Campanini). Frederick's servants consisted of only a few people. There are many anecdotes about these people: One day, so the story goes, the king rang the bell in his room. As no one came, he opened the anteroom and found his page asleep on a chair. He went up to him and wanted to wake him. But at that moment he noticed a piece of paper with writing on it. Frederick pulled it out and read it. It was a letter from the page's mother, who thanked him for the support that her son had saved from his salary and sent. Just a few years after the fourth guest room was furnished, Frederick the Great had it redesigned to its current form. The decorations are very different from those in the other rooms. Carvings by Johann Christian Hoppenhaupt the Younger, painted in natural colors, stand out vividly against the yellow of the walls. They show sculpturally protruding flowers, garlands, fruit and animal motifs. Even the chandelier is richly decorated with flowers and leaves. These natural motifs, which seem to be real, were part of the unmistakable style of Frederick's Rococo. The flowers and fruits depicted were cultivated in the park and greenhouses of Sanssouci in the 18th century. Fruit growing was one of Frederick's passions. In addition to the wine that grew on the terraces, his gardeners also grew cherry, peach and apricot trees on espaliers. The study and bedroom were the heart of Frederick's world. Here the king worked and slept, surrounded by his dogs. Frederick slept in a simple iron camp bed, which was usually outside the alcove, behind a screen near the fireplace. The king got up as early as 4 a.m. to attend to government business. He divided his time carefully. On his desk lay a calendar in which all his upcoming appointments were listed. The daily schedule was always the same. In order to free himself from all the evils left by the war, for the good of his country, which Frederick had in mind, and to always have the necessary cash on hand in the event of a new war, he urgently wanted to increase the income to 2 million thalers. The ministers opposed this, as the country was too exhausted to be burdened with increased taxes. So he decided to introduce customs duties. In France, customs art had been brought to a high level of perfection at that time. In 1766, Frederick prohibited the free import of coffee and free trade. In Prussia, only the state itself was allowed to trade in coffee beans. Coffee was subsequently classified as a luxury and subject to horrendous taxes. Instead of coffee, the people were supposed to go back to drinking beer soup and thus support the attacked local brewing industry. But the people showed little understanding.
