Arriving in the center of Nova Trento, we made a video from the city hall, and Mr. Renato, the taxi driver, came towards us and asked if we were going to go up to the Nossa Senhora do Bom Socorro sanctuary, which was not on our itinerary. He said, “You can’t leave without stopping there.” If you go to Nova Trento, you definitely have to stop by, it’s a magnificent place. At Morro da Cruz, located at an altitude of 525 meters, is the Nossa Senhora do Bom Socorro sanctuary in the middle of an ecological paradise, one of the most beautiful works of art, the fruit of nature and human faith. After driving up on a paved road, of good quality and well-signposted, you can have a panoramic view of the city, which is about 5 kilometers away. You can also do it by taking the Morro da Onça trail. During the journey along the trail, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city and also of neighboring municipalities. Along the way, there are 14 capitals that form the Via Sacra and a natural drinking water fountain. The Sanctuary houses several centuries-old relics, including a cross that was erected in 1899 and is located behind the church on the highest part of the hill. The history of the founding of the Sanctuary began in 1899, when the Jesuit priest, Luís Maria Rossi, decided to erect crosses on the highest hills of Nova Trento to celebrate the turn of the century. His assistant, the missionary Father Alfredo Russel, promised to erect a monument to Our Lady of Good Help next to the highest cross. The turn of the century was celebrated amidst songs and prayers, bonfires and fireworks. Months later, on July 13, 1901, on the Morro da Cruz, Father Alfredo Russel blessed the cross and the image of Our Lady of Good Help, on the site where a Sanctuary would later be built in her honor. To build the Sanctuary, the people of Neotrentino came together to donate materials and helped transport the materials and the statue of Our Lady of Good Help to the hill. The statue was donated by the Countess Clermont de Tonnerre, from France, and has been on Morro da Cruz since May 14, 1906. Mass is celebrated every Sunday, the annual festival is held on the first Sunday of May, and other events are held, both religious at the Sanctuary and social in the pavilions and restaurant; not to mention sports events. We would like to thank those who appeared in the filming, Luca Ternes and his family, a photographer from Montenegro RS who took beautiful photos of us, and Simone and her family, residents of Concórdia SC.
