On the edge of Champagne and on the edge of the Argonne forest, Sainte-Ménehould is a town that is both picturesque and welcoming. Formerly called Château-sur-Aisne, the city owes its name to Manehildis who distinguished herself by her kindness and piety in the 5th century. Dom Pérignon was born there in 1639. The town was destroyed by fire in 1719 and rebuilt from 1726, in an 18th century architectural ensemble, the most beautiful buildings of which are the Town Hall and the Hôtel Viard-Morel, which has become the remarkable Museum of Art and History. Jean-Baptiste Drouet, postmaster, allowed the arrest of Louis XVI in June 1791. Nearby, the historic site of the Battle of Valmy on September 20, 1792 and the Argonne sites that witnessed the First World War are unmissable.
