The city of São Roque de Minas is a Brazilian municipality in the state of Minas Gerais that is part of the Nascentes das Gerais and Canastra tourist circuit. The city is named after a saint, but it was once a land of brave Indians and black warriors. The first inhabitants of the region of São Roque de Minas were the Cataguases Indians, who despite their reputation for being fierce, were decimated by whites in the 17th century. Practically nothing remained of them, apart from their name. Then came the escaped black slaves who formed some famous quilombos in the Serra da Canastra region. The most famous was that of Pai Inácio, which is said to have been as large as that of Palmares. The blacks made the most of the abundant water and fertile lands at the headwaters of the São Francisco River and lived off agriculture, fishing and hunting. They resisted the rule of the whites for many years, but were annihilated in a bloody battle under the command of a certain Diogo Bueno da Fonseca, in the mid-18th century.
