About :

The history of East Frisia from 1866 to 1946 is marked by major political and social upheavals. During this time, the region experienced numerous historical turning points that shook both Germany and Europe. In 1866, as a result of the German War, East Frisia became part of the Kingdom of Prussia. Before that, it had been part of the Kingdom of Hanover since 1815, which in turn was dissolved after Prussia's victory against Austria and incorporated into the expanding Prussian Empire. This integration initially brought with it a change, as the East Frisians had to come to terms with the new Prussian administrative structures and the Prussian authorities. The Prussian administration and the military increasingly shaped public life in East Frisia. In 1871, when the German Empire was founded, East Frisia was integrated into this new empire as part of Prussia. However, the industrialization that was sweeping large parts of Germany at the time had little impact on East Frisia. The region remained predominantly agricultural. The rural structure, the harsh climate and the remoteness from the large urban centers meant that East Frisia remained economically underdeveloped compared to other parts of Germany. Emigration was also a major issue during this period. Many East Frisians sought their fortune in the New World, especially in the USA, because prospects in their homeland were limited. The First World War from 1914 to 1918 also brought great changes to East Frisia. Although the region was not directly in the war zone, East Frisians felt the effects of the war through food shortages, economic uncertainty and the return of numerous war veterans. After the end of the war and the abdication of the Kaiser in 1918, the German Empire was transformed into the Weimar Republic. There were also political and social upheavals in East Frisia during this period. The inflation of the early 1920s and the global economic crisis of 1929 hit the region hard. Unemployment and poverty spread and political tensions increased. In the 1930s, the NSDAP, the National Socialist German Workers' Party, also gained increasing influence in East Frisia. As in many other rural regions of Germany, many people here were impressed by the promises of the National Socialists, which promised work, order and stability. When Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933, the systematic coordination of politics, administration and society began in East Frisia. Critical voices were silenced and Jewish citizens and political opponents were increasingly persecuted. The Second World War, which began in 1939, also had serious consequences for East Frisia. Although the region was not directly at the centre of the fighting, many East Frisians were sent to war as soldiers and the region experienced air raids and military activities, especially towards the end of the war. Ports such as Emden were strategically important and were therefore targeted by bombing raids. The civilian population suffered from the increasing destruction and many people lost their homes. Towards the end of the war, numerous people from the eastern regions of the German Reich fled the approaching Red Army, and many of them came to East Frisia, which became a great burden for the already war-torn region. After Germany's capitulation in May 1945, East Frisia was also in ruins. The region became part of the British occupation zone. The British tried to bring public life back on track, but reconstruction was laborious and marked by the traces of the war and the rule of the National Socialists. East Frisia remained largely rural and economically weakened for a long time by the consequences of the war. The integration of the many refugees and displaced persons from the eastern regions posed a great challenge. With the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1949, a new era began for East Frisia in which reconstruction and a return to a peaceful life were the focus. But the formative years from 1866 to 1946 left deep traces in the region and shaped the people's identity in a lasting way. - - === - - - Why am I starting a vlog? • Between dream and reality ????
