(ACCEPTANCE OF THE INDEPENDENCE ANTHEM AND MEHMET AKIF ERSOY COMMEMORATION DAY ARTICLES, INFORMATION 12 MARCH) The Independence March is the national anthem of the Republic of Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The lyrics are by Mehmet Akif Ersoy, the composition is by Osman Zeki Üngör. It was accepted as the national anthem of the Republic of Turkey by the Turkish Grand National Assembly on March 12, 1921. In order to meet the need for a national anthem that would bring society together and revitalize common feelings during the most exciting days of the War of Independence, the Ministry of Education organized a lyrics competition in 1921. 724 poems participated in this competition. Mehmet Akif, who initially did not want to participate in the competition because there was a cash prize for the winning lyrics, entered his poem, which he dedicated to our Heroic Army, into the competition upon the insistence of the Minister of Education Hamdullah Suphi. Mehmet Akif's poem was accepted as the national anthem in the session of the Turkish Grand National Assembly on March 12, 1921. 24 composers participated in the second competition held for the composition of the poem. The selection committee, which convened in Ankara in 1924, accepted Ali Rıfat Çağatay's composition. Although this composition was played until 1930, it was changed in 1930 and the current composition prepared by the Presidential Orchestra Conductor Zeki Üngör in 1922 was put into effect. The harmonization of the anthem was done by Edgar Manas and the band arrangement was done by İhsan Servet Künçer. The poem, consisting of 9 quatrains, was accepted as the National Anthem of the Republic of Turkey by the Turkish Grand National Assembly on March 12, 1921.
