The Bydgoszcz Canal was built in 1774, employing up to 18,000 people. At that time, 26 km of waterway was built, intersected by 9 wooden locks. However, the waterway quickly had to be closed to shipping and modernized due to silting. At the end of the 18th century, engineer Conrad Peterson undertook the reconstruction of the canal to improve shipping. Work lasted until 1801. The first 9 locks made of burnt brick and 3 weirs were built. At that time, plantations and parks were also created on the Bydgoszcz Canal. Renovation work on the canal lasted until 1852, with breaks. Another major investment was forced by the increased traffic on the canal. Work began in 1910 and was completed in 1915. At that time, a new section of the canal was dug, leaving the Old Canal as a park. In 1971, during the construction of Rondo Grunwaldzkie, part of the Old Bydgoszcz Canal was filled in along with two locks. Currently, inland navigation does not play such an important role in Poland. The future of navigation on the Bydgoszcz Canal is seen in tourism and efforts are being made to open the waterway from Berlin to Gdańsk through the Bydgoszcz Canal. 2015.06.04 In connection with the launch on 2016.01.16, of a new tram line and the purchase of new Swing trams from Bydgoszcz PESA.
