These two exams were intended to replace the well-known interviews that were carried out in the Civil Registries when applying for nationality. In this way, what was intended was to create a uniform and homogeneous system for all those who aspired to have a Spanish DNI and passport, since until then each Civil Registry carried out its own interview, with more or less difficult questions, with the personal assessment of each official intervening in this process, which decided whether or not the foreigner was integrated into Spanish society. After almost six years of the modification of this procedure, every foreign person who wants to apply for Spanish nationality must prove that he or she has previously passed these two exams: The CCSE: This is an exam on constitutional and sociocultural knowledge of Spain. And the DELE exam or language exam. This test must only be passed by foreigners whose mother tongue is not Spanish. But, do these exams have to be taken in all cases? What if I can't read or write? What if I have studied in Spain? As a general rule, any foreign person who wants to obtain their Spanish ID and passport must take these two exams, but the regulations governing this process also contemplate the possibility of requesting an exemption from the Spanish nationality exams.
