When to use a soft starter or a frequency inverter? It is a very common question among electricians, deciding between a soft starter or a frequency inverter, so which electronic starter should I use? First, we need to understand how both Soft-Starters work. They are static starters designed to accelerate, decelerate and protect three-phase induction electric motors by controlling the voltage applied to the motor. The frequency inverter is used to control the motor speed, i.e., it is a device used in three-phase electric motors to drive, vary the frequency and voltage to control the rotation speed and power consumed. Basically, when the objective is to simply drive the motor, we use the soft starter. When the objective goes beyond starting, to be able to control the actions of the motor shaft end and/or automate the process, the frequency inverter should be used. What determines which component will be used is basically the type of function required and the function that the component offers. Soft starter • Low to medium starting torque applications • Light load applications • Low or no speed control during run mode • Reduced mechanical wear and tear and system damage • Power-up control • Power monitoring Variable frequency drives • Single-phase applications in some drives • Speed control and operating system efficiencies at reduced speeds during run mode • High starting torque applications • Continuous feedback for critical position control • Holds rotor at zero speed • Reduced mechanical wear and tear and system damage Programmed starts Starting times up to 30 seconds are typical, but most soft starters have some capabilities in excess of 30 seconds, up to 999 seconds. Long starting times are not normal, and the thermal capabilities of the system, including the motor, must be considered. Acceleration times can be set to 3600 seconds. Long times are typically associated with high inertia loads, reducing the drive size required. Knowing how and when to use this type of component is very important, as is always being careful to apply the knowledge in the safest way possible, thus avoiding possible different electrical accidents.
