His documentary films, including "Ghazavat" (1992, the first documentary about Chechnya), "Howling for God" (1997, "Beloved of God", about life in mystical Sufi brotherhoods) and "Cabbala in Kabul" (2007, about today's Afghanistan seen through the enmity between the last two Jews in Kabul), have won some of the most important international awards: the FIPRESCI Prize at the IDFA Festival in Amsterdam (1998), the Nanook Prize at the Ethnographic Film Festival in Paris (2007) and the Grand Prix of the Astra Festival in Sibiu (2008). ???? NADINE VLĂDESCU was born and raised in Târgoviște, but she considers herself a Bucharest native because she has lived in Bucharest for twenty years. She graduated from the Gheorghe Lazăr National College in Bucharest, the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures, the European Master in Conference Interpreting from the University of Bucharest and the Master in Creative Writing, prose department, from the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom. She lived in Lyon, Paris, London and Norwich, but returned to Bucharest, where she feels most at home. She translates literature (Dan Rhodes, Elizabeth Strout, Alice Munro, Edna O'Brien, Tracy Chevalier, Jonathan Coe, Sue Townsend, Kaui Hart Hemmings, etc.) and many and varied words from English, French and Italian, in her dual role as a man of words from (and into) other languages: translator and conference interpreter. She performed on the Athenaeum stage – not pieces for soloist and orchestra, but the words of Orhan Pamuk. She has published travelogues, reviews, interviews with Romanian and foreign authors (Salman Rushdie, Rawi Hage, Hanif Kureishi, Jonathan Coe, etc.) and various articles in Dilema veche, Dilemateca, Observator cultural and Time Out Bucharest. He contributed to the collective volumes My First Trip Abroad (Art Publishing House, 2010), Text and Image Hunting 2 (Pandora M Publishing House, 2016), How I Love You (Vellant Publishing House, 2017), How Are You? (Vellant Publishing House, 2020) and initiated and coordinated the volume Our Imaginary Friends (Humanitas Publishing House, 2015).
