When the 19th century saw a rapid development of medical technology and science, forensics began to take its first steps. Many different methods began to be used to fight crime, most of which are still used today. Biological traces of plant origin turned out to be particularly interesting and at the same time quite unusual. Thanks to them, many pressing questions can be answered during the investigation: Where did the crime take place? Who is the murderer? When and why did death occur? ... The lecture took place on October 24, 2024. Speakers: Dr. hab. Renata Stachowicz-Rybka and Dr. Eng. Sylwia Skoczylas-Śniaz work at the W. Szafer Institute of Botany of the Polish Academy of Sciences, in the Paleobotany and Paleoenvironment group. Their main scientific interests are Quaternary paleobotany, in particular the reconstruction of climate and environmental changes in the Pleistocene and late glacial and Holocene of Poland, Ukraine, Russia and Germany based on the analysis of plant macroremains, i.e. fossil seeds, fruits and other plant parts. Dr. hab. Renata Stachowicz-Rybka also carries out work in the field of archaeobotany, while Dr. Eng. Sylwia Skoczylas-Śniaz works in the field of Quaternary malacology. Working as a court expert was an impulse for them to become interested in the topic of the use of botany in forensics. ––––– Season 2024 DETECTIVE BOTANICAL 🕵️🌷⚗️ Following the pattern of previous years, we have prepared several lectures for you - this time we focused on the role of plants in forensics and justice.
