Alexey Volkov has spent over two decades researching the history of the Battle of Rzhev. First, he studied documents and maps at TsAMO, and then, together with other searchers, he went to the sites of battles, raised fallen soldiers in order to bury their remains with military honors. With this video, he begins his story about the terrible 14 months of virtually non-stop “local battles.” In August 1942, having quickly captured a bridgehead near the village of Znamenskoye, the Red Army was unable to build on its success, which ultimately resulted in bloody and unsuccessful attempts to storm the German defenses. Why was the initial success not built on? Could this operation have ended with the liberation of Rzhev? This and much more in our new video.
