Nowhere are Russia and America geographically closer than in the Bering Strait: only three kilometers separate the islands of Great Diomedes and Little Diomedes, the former belonging to Russia, the latter to the USA. The Russian Chukchi Peninsula and American Alaska, between which the strait runs, are also close to each other at 85 kilometers. The Bering Strait is not only a geographical border, but also a political one. Geographically, it marks the transition from the Pacific to the Arctic Ocean; politically, however, it was a symbol of confrontation for almost five decades: during the Cold War, the strait was considered a curtain of ice that - like the Iron Curtain in Europe - separated the western and eastern power blocs. Since 1945, the Bering Strait has served as a barometer of the ambivalent relationship between the two superpowers that face each other here. "With Open Cards" invites you to take a closer look at this geostrategically important region.
