About :

Actors of this route: historian, head of the Institute of History and Archeology of the Baltic Region prof. Vasilijus Safronov, VDU historian, doc. Kastytis Antanaitis, LMTA Klaipėda Faculty Prof. Stanislovas Žilevičius. This route will take viewers of the show to interwar Klaipėda, which, according to historian K. Antanaitis, had the face of a German city. "Klaipėda's otherness remained not only because it had autonomy, but also because the civil and criminal laws of the Kingdom of Prussia remained. It may seem strange, but this region was probably a good place for murderers", K. Antanaitis intrigues. The guests of the interwar Klaipėda city were welcomed not only in German order, but also with buildings designed by German architects. The first object is the former home of Mejhofer's shipping company in the era of steamships, and in the interwar period it was the Klaipėda region directory, the corridors of which the writer Ieva Simonaitytė also walked. Few people know that the construction of this building was overseen by the President of Lithuania A Smetona himself, and he did not hide that he was inspired by the power of Chicago's skyscrapers. The show's team will also explain how the residents of Klaipėda region lived in the interwar period, who, according to K. Antanaitis, had reason to look down on Lithuanians. Another object is the Klaipėda Savings Bank building. What is this, the arch of the former oldest city. Designed by Paul Giesing, the building fascinated the residents of the port city and the guests of the city at that time? A real gem of architecture is the Klaipėda Post Office Palace, whose tower's carillon still delights the ears of music connoisseurs. "Here is the second carillon. The first one was built by a German," says prof. Stanislovas Žilevičius laughs that even here you can see a kind of competition between the cities. Speaking about this building, the interviewer smiles that until recently, Kaunas had to make a lot of effort to overtake Klaipėda. A radio studio was installed in the Post Office during the period of the first independence. From here, the radio signals were sent to another object of the show - the Jakės radio station. The installation of this radio station cost the state half a million litas and was one of the government's investments in order to foster Lithuania. However, according to historian K. Antanaitis, the feeling of owning one's own state in a larger state prevailed in Klaipėda region, so were the residents of Lesser Lithuania interested in the Lithuanian language? And what can connect the radio station of Yaki and the national flag of Belarus? About the German and still unknown face of interwar Klaipėda and the unsuccessful attempts of the then government to Lithuanianize the region - on the LRT PLUS program "Stop lane" on Sunday at 11 o'clock.
