Flavius Stilicho (c. 358 – August 22, 408) was a Roman general of Vandal (on his father's side) descent, and the de facto ruler of the Western Roman Empire under Honorius. Stilicho is a very controversial figure in Roman history. Most often, when describing him, they go to extremes, depicting him either as a valiant defender of Rome or as a clever intriguer and usurper. Stilicho became a character in Theodore Parnitsky's novel "Aetius, the Last Roman." That's right. Echo of Moscow. Historian Natalia Ivanovna Basovskaya tells the story.
