Label and copyright: The shores of Lake Skadar, the largest on the Balkan Peninsula, are 40 kilometers long and 14 kilometers wide. And it can be proud of its depth, because its bottom is sometimes at 7-8 meters. It receives water from several rivers. However, it flows only once - the Bojana River, which rushes towards the Adriatic Sea, watered by the clear and sweet waters of Skadar. But, the indisputable beauty, given by nature, is multiplied by all those peninsulas and islands, where long ago, fishermen nested, rulers held palaces, monks, scribes, printers, scholars, merchants and naturalists built temples. There are as many as 15 medieval Orthodox monasteries on Lake Skadar, which were exceptional spiritual centers and, in the past, witnessed stormy events. Over time, on the island's plain, overgrown with bushes and pomegranates, there were the remains of temples, the center of the monastery built and restored during the reigning dynasties of Vojislavljević, Balšić, Crnojević and Petrović. There is no precise information about the church of St. Đorđe, and it is believed that its founder was Đurđe II Stracimirović Balšić, and that it was built in the last decades of the 14th century. This is confirmed by the dedication of the temple to the saint, whose namesake is this Zeta ruler, and the fact that not far away, his wife Jelena, daughter of Prince Lazar, built her burial church, but only after her second husband - Sandalj Hranić Kosača - had passed away. Jelena took care of the church of St. Đorđe, paid for repairs and donated religious objects. In the stormy and difficult years of wars and devastation, the Beška monastery was abandoned, and it was like that until the end of the 19th century, when the church of the Virgin, Jelena's endowment , restored by Prince Nikola the First Petrović. Centuries of cultural history left traces on this rugged ground, but in the last renovation, which was initiated by the blessed Metropolitan Amfilochia, everything that was almost lost was resurrected. . As the days change, barrels and bonaces, to be a decoration and a clear sign on a small island, whose size is multiplied many times over by the work of those who vowed here to serve the Lord and their ancestors.
