Quotes and excerpts from the book “The Collected Works” by Robert Adams. A disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi, Robert Adams (1928 - 1997) was an American teacher of non-dualism, widely known among those who investigate the Advaita philosophy and among Western devotees of Bhagavan. His teaching was based on the path of jñāna yoga, with an emphasis on the practice of self-enquiry (Atma-Vichara). Adams did not write any books or publish his teachings, as he did not wish to gain a large following, but preferred to teach a small number of dedicated seekers. Adams asserted that there was no new teaching, and that this knowledge could be found in the Upanishads, the Vedas and other ancient scriptures. “You must be completely honest with yourself. Completely honest. Completely honest with yourself to see the way you are behaving. To see how your thoughts have been governing you. Your mind has been telling you, ‘This is like this and that is like this.’ This is good, that is bad. This is right, that is wrong. Being critical all the time. That has to be dropped, totally and completely.” Robert Adams. “Spiritual practice does not mean that you should not go anywhere or do anything. You can watch TV, you can go to the movies, you can swim, you can play golf, you can go bowling, but never forget who you are, that’s all. Always remember who you really are.” Robert Adams. “When you realize that the entire universe is a manifestation of your mind, you become omnipresent. And in omnipresence are contained all our needs, and all our needs are met from within. But when you start worrying and thinking about it, you spoil everything. Then you have to do human things to take care of yourself. But if you leave that human layer alone, and come back to the understanding that it’s all in your mind, you automatically let go of the mind, and the Self takes over, bringing the right people into your life, the right situation, the right address. Remember, your body came to this earth because of karma. And it will go through whatever it has to go through. But you have nothing to do with it because you are not your body. But if you think about it you ruin it. So allow your body to do whatever it came here to do. Don't interfere. Don't fight. Just watch. Don't react. You'll be fine.” Robert Adams.
