In 1987, a woman was brutally attacked on a train platform in Essen. The woman was on her way home alone when a man appeared out of nowhere, put his arm around her neck and stabbed her with a knife. Because the perpetrator took money with him, the police assumed it was a robbery. The woman survived. An emergency operation saved her. But there were no witnesses and the survivor could not remember the perpetrator. The police did not know who the perpetrator was. And it would remain that way for a long time. At first, nobody suspected Ulrich S., a 30-year-old Essen resident who was already serving time in Werl prison for robbery and extortion and was on leave at the time. Almost two weeks after the first attack at the train station, Ulrich S., who had not returned from his leave, was wandering around Essen, trying to watch women undressing in their apartments. But in vain. He is irritable and very tense because he has not managed to keep the tension high: Ulrich S. passes by the Essen-Fronhausen stop. At that time, the swimming instructor Sabine W. is waiting for her lane after work. Ulrich S. discovers the woman by chance. He rapes and kills her. After these two crimes in a short space of time, the people of Essen are afraid. The police have few clues. The investigators assume that different perpetrators are involved because of the different motives. Then Ulrich S. looks for his third victim, but the woman survives the attack and is able to give the police information. A composite sketch is created. But more crimes are committed before the police are finally able to convict the perpetrator using a forgotten camera. Our host Florian speaks to the former prison doctor Joe Bausch about Ulrich S. - Joe Bausch was working in Werl prison at the time of the murders. He knew the serial killer and investigated him at the time. ------- Table of contents 0:00 Intro 1:07 The first crime 2:03 The perpetrator 4:00 The prison leave 5:18 The perpetrator's fantasies 7:30 Further crimes 8:45 The investigation 10:55 The next crime 12:17 The arrest? 13:38 The time after prison 15:08 Interview with the victim 17:00 Manhunt for the serial killer 19:25 The crucial mistake 21:10 The trial and the verdict 23:35 Conclusion ____ If you are interested in other criminal cases from NRW, follow our channel ➡️ / @lokalzeit-mordorte ___ We are #MordOrte, the true crime format of WDR Lokalzeit. I'm Florian and I'm new here. I am a child of the 90s, but the true crime fans in my family showed me the very, very original formats. "Stahlnetz" from the 1960s. Most of you won't know that, but we watched it on video cassette - everyday crime in black and white. Absolutely captivating for my ten-year-old self. The perpetrators were not frightening psychopaths, but people from the middle of society. That still fascinates me today: What are people capable of? What makes some people do such cruel things to others? I am delighted that I can now take you along as a MordOrte host into the lives and psychologies of the victims and perpetrators of the last decades.
