Wegmisbruikers (initially Wegmisbruikers!) was a Dutch television program that was broadcast by SBS6 from 2003 to 2020.[1][3] All 25 seasons were presented by André van der Toorn. Koos Spee, founder of the Bureau Verkeershandhaving Openbaar Ministerie (BVOM) and national traffic public prosecutor until 2009, was a regular guest on the program from 2007. Spee provided information about rules and, together with Van der Toorn, looked at what road users were doing wrong and how it should actually be done. In the program, a camera crew accompanied various inconspicuous police surveillance cars in different regions in the Netherlands. Road users who did not comply with the traffic rules were stopped and often received a fine. Images from both the camera car and the television crew's camera were used. After the stop, the production asked whether the road user wanted to be recognizable in the image. In the first seasons, a thumb (a plastic hand where a thumb up implies that the recipient has done it right) was given to passers-by who correctly guessed the meaning of a displayed traffic sign. Since 2018, offenders have been made unrecognizable and their voices distorted as standard due to the GDPR legislation.[4] In the last seasons, images from the bodycams of the surveillance officers were also used. In its heyday, the program attracted an average of 1.5 million viewers. In recent years, the viewing figures have dropped to 300,000 to 500,000 viewers. Credits: SBS6 - Wegmisbruikers
