1. The Guard at the Gate 2. The Dwelling Within the Wall 3. The People of the City 1 And it came to pass, when the wall was builded, that I set up the doors, and appointed porters, and singers, and Levites. 2 And I gave charge unto Hanani my brother, and unto Hananiah the captain of the castle at Jerusalem: for he was a faithful man, and one that feared God above many. 3 And I said unto them, Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun be hot; and while they stand by, let them shut the doors, and feel them: and let them set watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, every man in his charge, and every man over against his house. 4 Now the city was large and great; but the people were few therein, and the houses were not built. 5 And my God put it into my heart to gather the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, that they might be reckoned by generations: and I found a register of the genealogy of them that went up at the first, and found thus written therein, 6 These are the children of the province that went up out of the captivity of those that were carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and that returned to Jerusalem and to Judah, every man to his city; 7 Who came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, and Baanah. This is the number of the men of the people of Israel. 63 And of the priests: the children of Habaiah, the children of Koz, the children of Barzillai, who took a wife of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and was called after their name. 64 These sought their book, that they might be reckoned by genealogy; but it was not found: therefore were they put off from the priesthood, as unclean. 65 And the Tirshatha commanded them that they should not eat of the most holy things, until there stood up a priest with the Urim and Thummim. 66 The whole congregation together were forty-two thousand three hundred and sixty; 67 besides their male and female servants, who were seven thousand three hundred and thirty-seven; and they had two hundred and forty-five male and female singers; 68 their horses, seven hundred and thirty-six; their mules, two hundred and forty-five; 69 camels, four hundred and thirty-five; and asses, six thousand seven hundred and twenty. 70 And some of the heads of the fathers' houses gave to the work. The Tirshatha gave to the treasury a thousand drams of gold, fifty basins, and five hundred and thirty priestly garments. 71 And others of the heads of the fathers gave to the treasury of the work twenty thousand drams of gold, and two thousand and two hundred pound of silver. 72 And that which the rest of the people gave was twenty thousand drams of gold, and two thousand minae of silver, and threescore and seven priests' tunics. 73 And the priests, and the Levites, and the porters, and the singers, and some of the people, and the Nethinims, and all Israel, dwelt in their cities.
