Things have become restless in the Scottish Highlands. Newly arrived millionaires are buying up huge areas and want to transform the landscape in the fight against climate change. They are convinced that Scotland must become wilder again in order to make its contribution to climate protection. Their goal is to renature their large estates in order to bind more carbon dioxide. Jeremy Leggett has lived on the banks of Loch Ness for more than three years. From here, the 69-year-old is planning a green revolution. The long-time climate activist made his fortune with solar energy. In 2020, he sold his company and used the money to buy the former Bunloit hunting estate. But instead of shot and rifles, wild nature should now have the say here again. Leggett is a committed activist. For him, climate change is a monster threat that no one can waste any more time. He is therefore putting his energy into renaturing the Highlands. His ambitious goal: to bind more CO2 and at the same time promote biodiversity on his estate. To do this, he is having new mixed forests of deciduous trees planted, monocultures of conifers cleared and moors re-wetted. Traditional Scots fear that the super-rich climate activists are destroying the hunting grounds in the Highlands. Jamie Williamson is the fifth generation to run a hunting estate. But his estate is now surrounded by the new "green" landowners. And they are deliberately killing deer so that young trees can grow. Williamson is worried about the effects: "If they simply slaughter the deer, that will also destroy our deer hunting." It is a kind of culture war in the Highlands. Jeremy Leggett has managed to attract many investors to his projects. With his company Highlands Rewilding, he now wants to show that renaturation can also make money. The race for state subsidies and funding has only just begun.
