Inheriting millions without doing anything for it. For many people, this sounds like the big win in life. Every year, around 200 - 400 billion euros are inherited or given away in Germany. Despite inheritance tax, allowances and exceptions ensure that large parts of this remain tax-free. But is that really fair? Some say: Of course, if your own family invests their time and energy in building up wealth, their descendants should also get something out of it. But critics believe that inheritance is unfair per se. In a democracy, it cannot be that inheritances worth millions go to a small part of society that has basically done nothing for it. So a low inheritance tax would ultimately be a reason for social injustice in Germany. One possible suggestion: redistribute wealth! So do we need a new inheritance system or is it as fair as it is now? Our guests: Marlene Engelhorn, heiress Orry Mittenmayer, activist and editor Wolfgang M. Schmitt, podcaster Roland Strango, real estate investor Gerd Maas, family entrepreneur Anastasia Barner, founder of FeMentor Questions 00:00 Intro 00:23 Question 1 // Is inheritance fair? 02:47 Question 2 // Why are you angry about the fact that you will inherit? 04:00 Question 3 // Why do you think a higher inheritance tax is unfair? 04:50 Question 4 // Do you think it is unfair to forego the inheritance that your mother has earned? 05:19 Question 5 // Why should Anastasia, for example, be deprived of her inheritance? 07:00 Question 6 // Why shouldn't we increase inheritance tax? 11:46 Question 7 // Could a higher inheritance tax lead to fewer investments and create incentives? 12:28 Question 8 // Do you agree that the majority of the population is not able to build up wealth? 13:44 Question 9 // Can everyone build up wealth? 14:45 Question 10 // If around half of the wealth inherited is not the result of work, but is inherited as unearned wealth, doesn't that contradict the principle of achievement? 22:41 Question 11 // Can we agree to increase the tax allowances, but increase the tax rate for the "super rich"? 24:12 Question 12 // Can we agree that if the state needs more revenue to create equal opportunities, it should generate the money through higher income or profit taxes and leave inheritance tax untouched? 25:05 Question 13 // Can we agree that everyone can inherit a tax allowance of 400,000 euros and that amounts of money above this should be taxed as progressively as income?
