The restored Mat'36 of the Railway Museum was transported from Blerick to the Railway Museum in Utrecht by the Mat'54 and Mat'46 on Sunday 22 May 2023. Curator Erik Plomp is delighted. The showpiece of the exhibition 'Onder Hoogspanning', the electric multiple unit Mat'36 252, has finally arrived at the Railway Museum in Utrecht. It was a race against time. Plomp: “It was still exciting for a while, the original transport from our depot in Blerick on 13 May could not go ahead due to an overheated slide bearing. But the train had to be in Utrecht for the opening of the exhibition on 25 May. A weight off my mind that this succeeded.” In the exhibition 'Onder Hoogspanning, electrificatie in stroomversnelling' (Under High Voltage, electrification in rapid acceleration), the Railway Museum looks back at the electrification of the railway in 1938. Mat'36 On 15 May 1938, 90 electric train sets Mat'36 suddenly came onto the railways. It was the final part of a major operation by the Dutch Railways in which the 'Middennet' was electrified. Steam locomotives had to make way for modern electric equipment. The streamlined Mat'36 was the epitome of this progress. From this day on, the trains started running according to a 'rigid' timetable; they departed at fixed times. The Railway Museum has been able to restore one example of a Mat'36, partly thanks to the Foundation for the Preservation of Disposal of Dutch Railway Material (Stibans) and the Association of Friends of the Railway Museum. Unique restoration project Erik Plomp: “The restoration of the Mat'36 252 is a truly unique project, in which the museum has completely rebuilt an electric train from scratch. This has never been done before. We have worked very hard in recent months to get it ready for the exhibition and it looks beautiful. When you enter the train now, it smells like new again. That's wonderful!” Under High Voltage The exhibition 'Under High Voltage' shows in an interactive way what electrification entails. What is needed to electrify a railway line, how does an electric train work and what innovations were there? Visitors can look under the train at the electrical installation themselves and discover how electricity works with interactive games and touchscreens.
