Earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis: georisks often occur unexpectedly, sometimes with fatal consequences. The most and strongest earthquakes worldwide can be observed at the boundaries of continental plates, which are a rigid part of the Earth's crust floating on the liquid rock of the Earth's upper mantle. In the case of an underwater earthquake, the sudden rise or fall of parts of the seabed can create powerful tidal waves, which then cause great damage as tsunamis on flat coasts. What exactly happens in the Earth's interior and how can we predict such natural disasters? Martin Meister, editor-in-chief of GEO International, spoke with geophysicist Torsten Dahm from the GFZ Helmholtz Center Potsdam about seismological early warning systems, man-made earthquakes and which regions are particularly at risk in the future.
