In the land of farmers and rural workers, crack consumption is second only to alcohol. And yet, research is still in its infancy and public policies to combat addiction among farmers are practically nonexistent. Caminhos da Reportagem went to the interior of São Paulo, where workers consume the drug on the farm or after work in the fields, to show and discuss this sad reality. “It is very easy to use crack in the sugarcane fields because it is a sea of sugarcane. You get lost there. There is no supervision,” warns sociologist Arlete Fonseca. Former rural workers and a farmer’s son tell how they managed to free themselves from addiction and drug dealers. Many of them lost everything, including their families. “I ended up becoming dependent on alcohol and drugs. And today I am fighting back,” rural worker José Bento dos Santos said on the program.
