According to the latest count by the City Council, of the 2,576 homeless people living in Madrid, 919 sleep on the streets. Almost 60% have suffered some kind of assault or robbery. For this reason, the majority ask for temporary accommodation where they can try to rebuild their lives. Reporteros 360 accompanies homeless people who live on the streets. More than half have health problems. They survive thanks to charity and small financial aid. Enrique has been on the Gran Vía for almost 30 years, selling poems to passers-by. Emilio has been sleeping in the Plaza Mayor for two years now because he lost everything he owned. Miguel lives in the San Martín de Porres Foundation shelter, along with 80 other men who have no resources. And José, who spent 20 years sleeping on cardboard, has managed to find a shared flat to try to get by. We spoke with Mensajeros de la Paz, which keeps the Church of San Antón open 24 hours a day, and other NGOs such as Acción en Red, which walks the streets offering coffee, and Reporteros 360, which lives with the homeless.
