A herd of deer in the Great Fatra Mountains survives the harsh winter. In winter, deer group into smaller or larger herds, made up of males, while females and younger deer are in separate herds. The oldest deer tend to be solitary or form groups of only 2-3 members. Deer survive the harsh freezing weather in resting cycles. Unlike other species of game, the "facultative sleep of the surface layers" of deer lasts only a few hours during the day, mainly between grazing cycles, which, if the game is not disturbed, are regularly repeated approximately every six hours, i.e. during the rest period, during which it digests and chews the food it has eaten. The duration of the freeze is limited to only a few hours and blood circulation is activated again. Disturbing the game at this stage thwarts the effect of saving energy. Let's remember this especially during severe frosts and heavy snowfall. More at predkamerou.sk wildlifeeducation.sk
