In 2007, when Romania joined the European Union, one of the conditions was to connect the entire population to sewage and drinking water networks. Because infrastructure in rural areas was almost non-existent, the EU also allocated funds to achieve this objective: from 2007 to the present, we have received over two billion euros in non-reimbursable community funds. The money has entered the mixer of Romanian institutions, from ministries to city halls and control bodies, whose joint effort should have taken our villages to civilized Europe. The results, however, are far below the level of the funds spent. Recorder set out after the money. In an investigation started in the spring of last year, we managed to unravel the complicated mechanisms behind which a disaster with incalculable effects is hidden: defrauded European money, dysfunctional networks that endanger people's lives and a state complicit in the robbery of its own citizens. ------------------------------------------------------------- Recorder is an online publication built by a team of journalists around these principles: honest journalism, done with passion and put in public service.
