In the months between 1944 and 1945 (from October to the end of the war), the Terme di Recoaro were the headquarters of the SS, with about 1500 German soldiers who occupied the entire town. On 20 April 1945, the Allied bombings heavily hit Recoaro and the Central Springs, causing dozens of victims among both civilians and German soldiers. But this was the prelude to the end of the war in Italy, because in this bunker in the hours immediately following the bombing the highest SS leaders in Italy (not only in the Agno Valley), decided that the time had come to capitulate and to tell Berlin, and therefore Hitler (with whom there was a direct connection), that it was time to surrender. The bunker resisted the bombings and today it is still there to bear witness, thanks to the Bunker Recoaro association, to a troubled period in the history of Alto Vicentino, in which the all in all bearable coexistence in the village clashed with the brutal crimes of the German troops against the Resistance gathered in the valley. Unfortunately, there was no shortage of pain, blood and decimated lives. The Recoaro bunker is immersed in the beautiful spa park and can be visited by reservation.
