His real name was Shimizu Satomu. He was born in Yamanashi Prefecture. After graduating from Nishimae Elementary School in Yokohama, he lived as an apprentice at Yamamoto Shugoro Shoten in Kobikicho, Tokyo. In 1926, his work "Sumadera Fukinai" was published in Bungeishunju, becoming his literary breakthrough. Although "Nihonfudoki" was recommended for the Naoki Prize in the first half of 1943, he refused the award.
