I read from Shincho Bunko's "Oinosuke Shimatsu". First published in "Shincho Novels", October 1959 (Showa 34). The story follows Shigetsugu, Ohisa and Sankichi, who were born and raised in the same tenement house, as they grow up together and separately. Shigetsugu: A resident of a tenement house in Kurofune-cho, Asakusa. He becomes a joinery craftsman. Ohisa: A childhood friend who lives in the same tenement house as Shigetsugu. Sankichi: A childhood friend who lives in the same tenement house as Shigetsugu and Ohisa. He becomes a lacquer craftsman. Genji: Shigetsugu's father. A used gold buyer. O-Yuri: Shigetsugu's younger sister. Tetsuzo and Yokichi: Children who live in the same tenement house as Shigetsugu and Ohisa. Mohei: Sankichi's grandfather. Omichi: A woman who is in a common-law marriage with Mohei. Kakuzo: Ohisa's father. A drunkard who tries to sell Ohisa. Masukichi: Ohisa's younger brother.
