She was born in Yamaguchi Prefecture. She graduated from Onomichi Municipal Girls' High School. After a complicated upbringing and working in a variety of jobs, his novel "Wanderings" became a bestseller, and he made a name for himself as a writer with his poetry collection "Seeing a Blue Horse," as well as autobiographical works such as "The Town of Organs and Fish" and "The Book of Poverty." He then turned to objective novels such as "Oysters," and continued to write short stories while serving in the army on the continent and in the south during the war. After the war, he achieved success with newspaper novels, and published a prolific series including the short story "Late Chrysanthemum," and the full-length novels "Floating Clouds" and "Meal" (his last work). He gained popularity for his unique style of writing, which described the reality of poverty while retaining a sense of dreams and brightness, but he died suddenly of a heart attack. His life was full of ups and downs, as he was always criticized, for example, when he first appeared in the literary world as an amateur novelist who exploited his poverty, then as an upstart novelist who exploited his six-month stay in Paris, and from the Second Sino-Japanese War to the Pacific War as a government-employed novelist who drummed up militarism.
