The Rauenstein/Refugee Cave in Saxon Switzerland is a wonderful hiking destination and is located on the left bank of the Elbe between Rathen and Wehlen. The panorama allows a view of the Bastei. The sandstones of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains were deposited on the bottom of a shallow sea in the Upper Cretaceous 98-88 million years ago. During the uplift of the Lusatian Granodiorite and the uplift of the Ore Mountains around 40 to 16 million years ago, the sandstone plate broke up in an almost checkerboard pattern, accompanied by basalt volcanism. These long-lasting processes have created structures that you can see and admire here at the Pudelstein Rauenstein.
